Why Are Billionaires Still Trying to Buy Our Schools?

Despite Gov. Greg Abbott and billionaire donor Jeff Yass pouring millions into pro-voucher campaigns, the public remains firmly against privatizing our schools.

Texas AFT President Zeph Capo brought the receipts this week to a press conference with Local Progress Texas, a coalition of local government officials and community partners working to advance racial and economic justice for Texans across the state. Watch what he had to say & share with your networks.

Recent polling shows that two-thirds of Texas voters oppose Abbott’s voucher scam, including 70% of public school parents and even half of base Republicans. What Texans do want is what they’ve always wanted: fully funded public schools and well-paid, certified teachers. An overwhelming 85% support more school funding, and 73% say teachers aren’t paid enough.

So, who is this voucher scheme really for? Not Texas families. It’s for out-of-state billionaires like Betsy DeVos and Jeff Yass, who want to profit from privatizing public education. Yass alone has spent $90 million to influence legislatures across the country, with much of that money spent in Texas to help Abbott buy seats for pro-voucher candidates (hat tip to Little Sis, a great transparency organization).

Make no mistake: this voucher bill is a vendor bill — designed not to help students, but to help wealthy donors cash in. Texans see through it. Now it’s time lawmakers did too.
